The Power of Our Words

Words are far more powerful than we often realize. A single complaint can change the energy of an experience, while a word of appreciation can uplift everyone involved. Our words are projections of what we believe, expect, and hold as true. Unity teaches that our words are prayers in motion, carrying our thoughts and intentions into the universe. Because our words can heal or hurt, inspire or discourage, create peace or create conflict, it becomes important to speak with awareness. The prayers we send into the world through our conversations often shape the experiences that return to us.

The Meaning of “I Am”

One of the most profound teachings in Scripture comes from Moses’ encounter with the burning bush. When Moses asked for God’s name, the answer was, “I Am That I Am.” These simple words continue to carry spiritual power today. We use them constantly: “I am tired,” “I am blessed,” “I am confused,” “I am grateful.” What follows the words “I Am” becomes a declaration of consciousness. As children of God and expressions of Divine Life, we are invited to become mindful of these sacred words and use them in ways that affirm truth, possibility, and spiritual growth.

Creating Through Conscious Choice

Life gives us many opportunities to choose where we place our attention. This does not mean denying our feelings or pretending challenges do not exist. Instead, it means consciously deciding how we respond to them. Rather than saying, “I am so confused,” we might affirm, “I am becoming clearer every day.” Rather than focusing on everything that seems to be going wrong, we can recognize the blessings that are still present. What we focus on tends to grow, and our words help direct that focus. Through conscious choice, we become active participants in creating the life we wish to experience.

What We Repeat, We Become

Every word we speak is like a seed planted in the soil of consciousness. Over time, those seeds take root and influence our thoughts, emotions, and actions.
