Faith in the Darkness

Faith does not require certainty.
Faith is the certainty of what is hoped for, even when it cannot yet be seen.

As the days grow shorter and the nights longer, darkness becomes more noticeable — and more symbolic.
It reminds us that even temporary darkness has something to teach us.

Think of a lighthouse.
To a vessel at sea, the light doesn’t remove the darkness — it simply gives direction.
It offers just enough illumination to endure the night and trust the shore ahead.

In places like Barrow, Alaska, the sun sets in November and does not rise again for over sixty days. And yet, life continues. So too do we continue — even through seasons of uncertainty, grief, transition, and change.

Honoring What Has Changed

For many, Thanksgiving brings up memories — and emotions.
We notice who is present, who is absent, and how relationships have shifted.

Some gatherings remind us that life is not the same as it once was.
And that realization can stir tenderness, grief, or longing.

Advent gives us permission to acknowledge these feelings — not to deny or suppress them, but to hold them gently.

Darkness and light exist together. Where there is light, there is shadow — and the shadow can make things seem larger or heavier than they truly are. But the shadow is not the enemy. It is part of the journey.

The Light Within Us

There is no place where God is not.
That divine spark is always present, even when it feels distant. During this season, we reflect on what truly matters: Who we forgive. Who we call. What we say — and what we leave unsaid.It is the matters of the heart that shape this journey.

Hope, Faith, and the Birth Story

The Christmas story is not a story of ease or certainty.
Every character stepped into the unknown — Mary, Joseph, the shepherds.

Mary herself was greeted with the words:

“The Lord is with you.” — Luke 1:28

She accepted her calling with courage and trust, allowing the Word to become flesh.

She proclaimed:

“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.”

Her faith reminds us that belief transforms possibility into reality.

Do not be afraid of the shadow — it is the portal to the light.

Faith and hope do not deny darkness.
They move through it.

When our expectations are not met, we do not give up.
We allow endurance to be born.

Faith becomes rooted.
Hope becomes active.
And belief opens the way for transformation.

Closing Prayer

God, thank You for walking with us.
We are grateful for the hope that lights our path
and the faith that carries us forward.

As we prepare our hearts for the Christ consciousness within us,
may we trust Your guidance,
honor our humanity,
and lean into Your presence.

We are grateful for this season of becoming.
We are grateful for hope.
We are grateful for faith.
